When you make compost basically you are recycling all your kitchen and garden waste. This has got to be a lot better than sending it all to landfill, with landfill there is only a certain amount of space available and when it is full that will be the end of it.
Making compost is a great way to reduce the impact on landfill as well as giving you some great nutrient rich compost for your garden. You would be amazed at the sort of things you can compost all your vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, tea bags old newspapers and cardboard even the contents of your hoover bag. Making compost has come a long way since the days of a traditional compost heap, all the back breaking work has been replaced with compost tumblers and worm farms.
The principle behind making compost is simple all you need is organic waste; vegetable peelings newspapers etc, combined with plenty of heat, air and moisture once you bring all these elements together you will end up with some high quality compost. Combining all these elements has never been easier, there are so many compost systems available for you to choose from.
Choosing the right compost bin is down to you and what you want, there are basic bins that you fill and turn occasionally, there are worm farms where you place all you organic waste and let the worms do the rest and there are tumblers that you can turn everytime you fill it up. Worm farms can be fascinating for young children to watch, worm farms are available with different tiers which you gradually fill up. As you fill one tray up the worms will work their way through it turning all that vegetable matter into compost and then starting on the next tray. It is quite fascinating with worms as they will only reproduce depending on the availability of food, this means there will never be any danger of having too many worms about. Unbelievably worm farms don't smell either which means that they can be left in the house which is perfect if you live in an apartment. If you do live in an apartment and have a few plants growing in pots it is still worth making compost, this can be done with a small kitchen compost system. With something like the Bokashi compost bin you place all your waste in the bin along with a composting agent this will help break down all that waste and turn it into good quality compost.
